Frequently asked questions.

What is sex therapy?

Sex therapy is a type of therapy that addresses sexual concerns. As a sex therapist, I specialise in helping individuals or couples overcome challenges related to sexual desire, arousal, orgasm, pain, or communication. Sex therapy can also help people learn more about their sexual anatomy, functioning, or safe sex practices in a confidential and non-judgmental space.

What should I expect during a sex therapy session?

During a sex therapy session, you can expect a supportive and non-judgmental environment where you can discuss your sexual concerns and goals. I may use a variety of techniques such as cognitive-behavioural therapy, mindfulness, or sex education to help you address your concerns. You may also receive homework assignments or exercises to practice outside of sessions. All sessions are “hands off and clothes on.”

How long does therapy take?

The length of therapy varies depending on your unique needs and goals. While some people may see improvements in just a few sessions, others may need several months or longer to see significant changes. Together, we will work to determine the best approach for you.

Is sex therapy only for couples?

No, sex therapy can be helpful for individuals, couples, or any type of relationship. I will work with you to determine the best approach based on your unique situation and needs.

What types of concerns can sex therapy address?

As a sex therapist, I can address a wide range of concerns, including low sexual desire, erectile dysfunction, premature ejaculation, pain during sex, sexual trauma, sexual orientation or gender identity issues, communication problems, and infidelity.

Why would I see a psychologist for sex therapy?

If you see a psychologist for your psychosexual concerns, you may be eligible for a Medicare rebate for your sessions. This is due to the growing recognition of the psychological factors that contribute to sexual well-being. Your general practitioner can advise whether your concerns could be treated under the Better Access Mental Health Care Plan, in which case you may be eligible for 10 rebated sessions with a psychologist per year.

What is the difference between a psychologist and a psychiatrist?

Psychologists and psychiatrists both work with mental health concerns, but there are key differences between the two professions. Psychologists focus on talk therapy and other non-medical treatments. Psychiatrists, on the other hand, hold a medical degree and are able to prescribe medication in addition to providing therapy.

How do I know if I need therapy?

Therapy can be helpful for a wide range of concerns, including anxiety, depression or relationship problems. If you are experiencing distress or feel like you are struggling in some way, therapy may be able to help. I can work with you to determine if therapy is the best option for your concerns.

Can I get medicare rebates for my sessions with you?

Your general practitioner can advise whether your concerns could be treated under the Better Access Mental Health Care Plan, in which case you may be eligible for 10 rebated sessions with a psychologist per year. No medicare rebates are available for couples therapy. You may also be able to be supported by your private health insurance.
